Old Navy Haul

I had some Old Navy Super Cash rewards to use this week and went in to Old Navy to only get a couple of things I've had my eye on and came out with 10 things!  But with my Super Cash rewards and the current sale deals, I walked out only having spent $85!  Here's a look at what I got!

Frost Free Fleece-Line Vest in Rich Rec, Small ($29.94 $14.70)
Women's Boatneck Sweater in Icelandic Mineral, Medium ($29.94 $11.02)

Styling Ideas:

Frost Free Fleece-Line Vest in Heather Grey Herringbone, Small ($34.94 $17.15)
Relaxed Scoop-Neck Tee in Kelp Forest, Large ($10.94 $4.30)

Styling Ideas:
Faux Leather Ballet Flats in Tan ($14.94 $4.58)
Lightweight-Sweater Infinity Scarf in Rich Rec ($16.94 $6.23)
Long Leggings in Black, Small ($12.50 $6.14)
Nude Colored Tami (tank/camisole), Large ($10.00 $3.68)
Quilted Zipper Pouch ($9.94 $6.10)
Plaid Flannel Scarf ($17.94 $5.50)

+ Tax ($5.56)

I love fall, dressing for fall, and shopping for fall clothing!  Since moving from Florida to South Carolina last year, I've been slowly accumulating more sweaters, outerwear, and other cold weather accessories like scarves.  This fall, I'm obsessed with burgundy and have been trying to restrain myself from buying too many things in this color but I couldn't resist the puffer vest and infinity scarf, especially at such a great discounted price!  I love that the vests are lined with fleece so they should be great for keeping warm with less bulk than a coat.  I'll probably get the green Basil Pesto color in a future sale.  I already own a pair of the cute tan ballet flats, but I've worn them so much I was in need of a replacement pair.  They provide practically no support and fit a little more narrow than past versions of this Old Navy flat so I wouldn't recommend if you have wider feet or have to be on your feet a lot at work.  I've been living in black leggings on the weekends lately so I'm glad to have another pair on hand.  I was pleased that they weren't see through when stretched.  I can never seem to have enough pouches and in polka-dots, I couldn't resist this one.  I'm not quite sure if the plaid scarf is meant to be a men's scarf or uni-sex, but either way I really liked the color and pattern for holiday outfits.  I bought more than I had planned to buy on this shopping trip but I also got a lot better deals than I was anticipating.   Also, 8 of the 10 items were things that were actually on my wardrobe shopping list.  And at $85 (or $8.50 per item average), I'm quite pleased with the deal I got on this haul, especially considering how much these items will get worn or used.

Stitch Fix #7 (October 2015)

I received my 7th Stitch Fix over the weekend and I loved it!  If you don't know, Stitch Fix is a mail-order personal stylist service.  Here's how it works:
  • You decide when and how often you want to receive a shipment.
  • You fill out a detailed style and sizing profile and leave a note for your stylist so they have an idea of what you're looking for.  I also provide a link to my Style board on Pinterest to better demonstrate what I like to wear.
  • There is a $20 styling fee for each shipment but you can use the fee towards purchasing items that you receive.  However, if you decide not to purchase anything you lose the $20 styling fee.
  • Each delivery includes 5 items which can include clothing, handbags, jewelry, and others accessories.  Delivery and return shipping is free.
  • You have 3 days after receiving your shipment to try on and decide what you want to keep or return.  You indicate which items you are purchasing and returning on your online account.  You also have the opportunity to provide feedback on each item.  If you take longer than 3 days to indicate your purchases or returns on your account, Stitch Fix will assume you're keeping everything and charge you for everything so don't forget! There is a pre-paid shipping bag in your box to return the items you decide not to purchase.
Here is the note I sent to my stylist Jennifer for this fix:
"Hi Jennifer.  I will be attending a conference in Austin in a few weeks & the meeting rooms are always cold so I'd like to try some lightweight sweaters to tops to wear with my cardigans.  Attire is casual to dress casual.  Other things on my wardrobe wishlist:  dolman sleeved tops, light to medium wash bootcut jeans, darker wash trouser jeans, & the Claris Lariat Spike Necklace.  Thanks!"
... and here is a look at what I received:

Styling Suggestion Cards

Market & Spruce Aleah Heathered V-Neck Dolman Top ($48) - KEEP!

I'm currently in love with the relaxed fit of dolman tops and want more, more, more!  So I'm glad Jennifer found one for me and in a nice dark green and black heathered color.  I think this top is versatile enough to be worn casually on the weekend or dressed up for work.  This was a definite keeper for me and Jennifer can feel free to send more dolman tops like this my way!

Soko Claris Lariat Spike Necklace  ($58) - KEEP!

I rarely wear jewelry so I don't invest much money into it but I've been shopping around for a nice, simple, inexpensive spike or bar lariat necklace for a while and haven't liked any of the one's I've found as much as this one by Soko.  The shine of the gold isn't too shiny or too dull, the length is just right for me, and the spike design is interesting but understated at the same time.  The weight is also nice; not so dainty that I could easily break it.  And the simple design means I could wear it both casually and for work.

Market & Spruce Yuna Chevron Pointelle Knit Sweater  ($68) - KEEP!
Kut From the Kloth Simmons Bootcut Jean ($78) - KEEP!
Ready for fall!
An oatmeal/beige colored sweater was one of the top items on my fall wardrobe wishlist.  I like the detail of this sweater and even though the pointelle sections are open-knit and see-through, it's not a major concern because it's not that way all over the sweater and I can wear a nude colored cami underneath.   My favorite Gap bootcut jeans from the past couple of years have mysteriously gotten smaller and I'm sure it has nothing to do with all the cookies I've been baking or the donuts at work.  :)  So I needed to find a new favorite pair of bootcut jeans.  I really like the fit and comfort of this pair by Kut From the Kloth but the length is too short for bootcut jeans in my opinion.  Although they don't look right with my ankle boots, the length will work great for days when I want to wear my flats.  I'm keeping these but my hunt for bootcut jeans to wear with my ankle boots must continue.

Daniel Rainn Persimmon Tie Neck Blouse  ($64) - KEEP!

I love the color of this blouse!  I didn't think I would keep it at first sight because of the sheer panel in the back and tie-neck bow but I tried it on anyway.  The sheer panel wasn't a concern because it's only across the shoulders so the back of my bra doesn't show and most likely I'll be wearing this with a blazer or cardigan so it'll be covered up anyway.  However, I do really like the cute dot pattern!  And I was surprised that the bow wasn't fussy at all.  It's not too big and drapes down nicely.  This will be great to wear with a black skirt or pants during my presentation at the conference.

The Price Breakdown

Cost to Keep Entire Box:  $316 - 25% discount - $20 styling fee credit = $217
Cost of What I Kept:  $217
Impressions:  I KEPT IT ALL!!  My stylist Jennifer did a great job selecting items to meet my requests.  I can definitely pack everything she sent me in this Fix for my trip to Austin.  And I can tell that she actually looks at my Pinterest style board to see what type of clothing items, outfits, and colors I've been pinning.  I live in neutrals and jewel tones and casual clothes so these pieces will easily fit in to my existing wardrobe.  And it's nice to be able to check off a few of the items I had on my fall wardrobe shopping list.  Because I kept all five items in this Fix, I was able to take advantage of the 25% off discount which meant the average cost per item was about $43 which isn't too bad considering how much wear I will get out of these pieces for both work and the weekend.

I admit that I used to be cheap when it came to shopping for clothes in my 20s.  My philosophy used to be "quantity over quality".  Now in my early 30s, I still like shopping for bargains but my philosophy on shopping for clothing, or shopping in general, has morphed into "quality over quantity".  Maybe its because I'm getting older and have learned to figure out what I like rather than what the trends are.  Now, I'm more willing to spend a little more money upfront to make investments in more timeless, higher quality pieces - however, I still don't wear high-end designer and doubt I ever will because I'm too frugal :).  I used to buy lots of cheap (which usually meant low quality) things so I would have more options because I was still learning what looked good on me and what my personal style was, or because I was trying to keep up with trends that quickly changed.  Eventually I was left with two bursting closets filled with clothes I didn't wear because they were out of style, didn't look good on me, or just really weren't my true style.  Or worse, I was throwing them away after only a couple of wears because they would shrink or stretch out, get holes, or a seam would unravel.  Every couple of years now I try to do a major closet overhaul and re-evaluate my style.  Several weeks ago I cleared out about 90% of my wardrobe and donated it to Goodwill.  So now I'm slowly rebuilding my wardrobe again.  A few key things that these fashion overhauls force me to think about is:
  1. How do I want to express or project myself with my clothing?  Am I being myself or just following trends and copying someone else's style?  Is my taste in fashion the same or has it changed?
  2. Am I shopping mindlessly?  Why do I want to buy something?  Because it's on sale, the fashion magazine says it's the new "it" item to have, I'm emotional or bored, or because there is an actual void in my closet or need to replace an existing favorite closet essential.  Is buying one more grey t-shirt when I already own six of them really going to add anything new to my wardrobe?  I've started keeping track of what I already own and what's on my shopping wishlist and assign a budget; this provides a plan and some restraint when I shop to avoid buying a lot of stuff I don't need.
  3. Am I wearing what I'm buying? Are there things purchased weeks, months or even years ago with price tags still on them?  Does it fit my lifestyle or work dress code?  I keep and organize receipts (and return postage labels for online orders) in case I change my mind or find that something just isn't going to work for my wardrobe (most stores allow returns anywhere from 30 to 90 days after purchase).
  4. Am I putting thought into how I'm going to incorporate what I buy with what I already own?  If I can't come up with multiple ways to style an item or have to buy more clothes to make an outfit, then it's a no go.  I try to avoid "one hit wonders" or chasing the rabbit down the rabbit hole hoping I one day find the perfect piece to go with it!
  5. Is it worth it?  Whether expensive or inexpensive, am I paying attention to the materials and how well an item is made/sewn to make sure it will launder well and hold up over time?  How easy is it to maintain?  Do I own a lot of "dry-clean only" or "hand-wash only" pieces?  Do I have time or want to be bothered with doing either?  Also, am I going to get a lot of use or wear out of it for my money?
I like the way my wardrobe and style has evolved over the years.  I'm no fashionista by any stretch of the imagination but I'm comfortable in what I wear and my simplified closet fits my sense of style and my lifestyle.  Stitch Fix has been another fun way to help figure out what I really like (and don't like) in clothing and add some nice new pieces to my wardrobe!

Sole Society - Mason Oversized Travel Satchel

This November I'll be traveling to Austin, TX for a few days to attend a conference for work.  In the midst of arranging my hotel and flight accommodations, I started thinking ahead about what I should pack and realized I really needed to replace my old carry-on bag.  I wanted something that looks nice and professional but not like your typical travel bag.  I needed something roomy enough to pack for a 3 day trip without being too bulky and cumbersome, and I wanted more organization than a duffel style bag.  I think I found what I was looking for with the Mason bag from Sole Society!

Sole Society Mason Oversized Travel Satchel ($79.95)
I purchased the bag in black but it also comes in cognac brown, grey, midnight blue, olive green, and oxblood.  All bag colors have the same gold hardware.  The black bag has what looks to be a micro snow leopard print lining.  The bag measures 13"H x 19 1/2"W x 7"D,  with a 8 3/4" handle drop and adjustable cross-body strap drop of  23".  Of the 13" bag height, the main compartment is about 9" and the bottom compartment 4".  Overall, the bag is a little smaller than my old 21" carry-on suitcase so there shouldn't be an issue with airlines trying to make me check it (I hate baggage claim!).

I was a little concerned about whether the main compartment would be big enough when I ordered but after seeing it in person I'm convinced it will be room enough to pack several pieces of clothing (I don't have to pack heavy winter clothing).  Just to get an idea of how much I could possibly fit in this bag, I tried stuffing in 2 pairs of jeans, a skirt, 3 tops, a cardigan, laptop and charger, book, 2 pairs of flats, and a cosmetic bag and still had a little room to spare!

The bottom shoe compartment is probably my favorite part about the design of this bag.  I've never really liked the idea of packing my shoes and toiletries bag together with my clothes so this compartment will allow me to pack them separately.
I like that the bag looks like a big purse so it has a more sophisticated look than the typical travel bag.  The leopard print lining also gives it more of a purse feel.  I also like that it has an interior zipper pocket and slip pockets like a purse to hold my wallet, keys, phone, etc.  There is also one exterior slip pocket that will be convenient for keeping my boarding pass easily accessible at the airport. There is a detachable luggage tag hanging on one of the handles as well.
Although this bag is sold as a travel bag, I think it would also make a nice "fancy" gym bag or work bag if you have to carry a laptop, chargers, lots of paperwork, a change of shoes, etc in addition to your regular purse contents.

This bag is faux leather and has a smell that needs to air out so I'm glad I ordered it well in advance of my trip in November.  Whenever I get new bags, I usually just put a dryer sheet inside for a couple of weeks before using to get rid of the "new" smell.  I also wanted to note that this bag does have some structure but not enough to always keep it's shape.  I don't mind it because having less structure makes it more comfortable to wear cross-body.  I think it'll also make it easier to shove in to overhead compartments on the plane.
Overall, I'm pleased with my first Sole Society purchase.  I got my bag for $64 instead of $80 because you get 20% off you first order if you join their email list (shipping is free for all orders over $30)!  The quality of the bag is pretty good for faux leather but I would still recommend taking advantage of the 20% off first order discount or sales rather than paying full price.

Here is the note I sent to my stylist Jennifer for this fix:
"Hi Jennifer! I really liked the fit of the Papermoon Waters Ikat Maxi dress in my last fix but would like to try it in a different print or a maxi with a similar cut & waistline. I'd also like to see some casual work tops. A pair of olive green jeans/pants would be nice too if available. And the black Urban Expressions Lyla Woven Crossbody Bag, pretty please!!! Thanks!
... and here is a look at what I received:

Price Breakdown

Cost to Keep Entire Box:  $286 - 25% discount - $20 styling fee credit = $194.50
Cost of What I Kept:  $68 - $20 styling fee credit = $48
Impressions:  I'm very happy my stylist Jennifer sent another version of the Papermoon Waters maxi dress!  I like the minty green and navy color and the interesting chevron pattern.  I have a navy blue chain wallet that goes well with the navy in the dress.  I also really like the tank style straps and the arm holes that aren't too low which make this dress bra friendly!  I don't wear dresses that often but this dress is really comfortable, and although the end of summer will be here soon, I will still get a lot of wear out of this dress this year because I live in a relatively warm climate.  I think the outfit with the denim jacket, nude sandals, and scarf on the styling card is cute and will be a great way to extend the wear of this dress in to fall.  This version of the Papermoon Waters maxi dress does seem to be made of a slightly lighter weight fabric and an inch or two shorter than the one I received in my last Stitch Fix but I think it's still a good length.  And the fabric isn't sheer considering it is a lighter colored fabric.  I like the dolman sleeves and navy stripes of the Market & Spruce top but I found the band of terry cloth fabric across the chest and underneath the arm quite weird.  First of all, it's like wearing a dish towel across your chest.  Two, it draws attention to the chest which isn't something I aim to do.  The terry cloth fabric apparently snags easily as well, as seen by the loose threads, so this sweater would be a disaster if laundered with anything with a hook or zipper.  The line up of the stripes and the bottom hem all seemed wonky as well.  If this was just a simple navy striped dolman top, I probably would have kept it but I'm returning this one.  I need to replace my old, fading pair of olive green chinos so I'm glad my stylist was able to find a pair for me to try on.  I really liked the olive green color of the Kut From the Kloth croped pants.  They would have been good for casual everyday wear and for casual work wear but unfortunately they were a little too small.  If they were a size bigger I would have kept them.  I didn't ask for a skirt but I'm assuming Jennifer thought the Papermoon pencil skirt would be nice to throw in since I asked for work tops.  My dress code for work is casual because I often have to venture in to horticultural research and production facilities, so pencil skirts and heels are not very sensible.  I love the burgundy color but it was too form fitting and I didn't like the lace edging (it made the skirt look like a slip instead) so I'm returning it.  I asked for a specific black crossbody bag but unfortunately it wasn't available at the time but I do like the teal green color of the Urban Expressions clutch Jennifer sent.  The size is good but the asymmetrical clutch design and gold chain (to wear crossbody) seem a little to dressy or "girl's night out" for everyday wear for me.  Although I really like the color, this is a clutch/bag I know I would rarely use so I can't justify buying it.  I'm going to continue looking for a crossbody about this size but in a more relaxed style and neutral color.

Overall, I like the variety of items my stylist selected and appreciate her efforts to get the maxi dress and olive green pants I requested.   I do wish she had included another top rather than the pencil skirt.  But the colors and patterns she chose for this fix are right up my alley!  Aside from standard neutrals, I really like jewel tones, blues and greens, and stripes which I'm pretty sure she has picked up on from my style profile and my Pinterest Style board.  I'm very happy with my maxi dress purchase and look forward to my next Fix!

Stitch Fix #5 (August 2015)

I received a box from Stitch Fix today!  Stitch Fix is a mail-order styling service.
Being honest about your sizes, clear in your style preferences and realistic in your clothing needs in your style profile is important to have a more successful Stitch Fix experience.  Pinning pictures on my Pinterest style board of how I wish I would dress and how I will actually dress will not help my stylist in selecting appropriate items for me!  So I've tried to be more realistic when posting pictures to the style board my stylist sees and make note of what I like about the outfits I pin.  I provide specific feedback on fit, cut, relevance to my wardrobe and lifestyle, etc when I review items I receive in my boxes to help my stylist select items that will work best for me in future boxes.  My first couple of boxes were not big hits with me but subsequent boxes improved as my stylist got more understanding about my style and shape from my feedback.  I also went back and tweaked my style profile as needed.  Some people even post pictures of themselves wearing the pieces they receive on their Pinterest board or their blogs so the stylist can see how the items they selected looked on the client.

If you do not like shopping, don't have much time to shop, or live in an area where there isn't too many interesting shopping options, Stitch Fix is a convenient way to have someone else shop for you and bring you items that you may not be able to find locally.  It is also good if you are in a style rut like me where you keep buying and wearing the same things.  A stylist can help pull you a little outside of your comfort zone or routine to try some things you may not normally try on.  However, if you really like shopping for great sale deals, then this service is probably not going to be a good fit for you.  Stitch Fix uses full retail prices so the prices are higher than I normally spend on clothing.  I like shopping for sale deals so Stitch Fix is more of an occasional splurge for me.  You do get a 25% discount if you buy everything in the box.

It has been a few months since I've scheduled a delivery from Stitch Fix.  This is my fifth delivery from them (the first one I've reviewed on the blog) and I've had the same stylist from the beginning but it is possible to change stylists.  Here is the note I sent to my stylist Jennifer for this fix:
"Hi! I'm interested in trying maxi dresses, tops that will pair well with a black maxi skirt or dark skinny jeans, and maybe a interesting wallet (or a brown clutch). I don't have any particular colors in mind but I do like what I've seen of the Sweet Grey Jody maxi and Gilli Mitchel maxi dresses. Bra-friendly styles are preferred (no spaghetti straps or strapless). Thanks!"

Impressions:  Overall, I think my stylist did a pretty good job selecting items to meet my requests and fit my figure (for reference, I'm 5'5", 36B, small to medium in most tops, and currently size 4 in jeans).  She didn't include tops for pairing with a black maxi skirt or dark skinny jeans like I wanted but she did include a pair of dark skinny jeans.  The Estrella skinny jeans have good stretch, lift and support, soft material, no gap in the waist, and they're not too long but I don't really "need" more dark skinny jeans at this time.  The wash and style isn't much different from a couple of pairs that I already own but these fit my waist better and I like the soft, four-way stretch and sculpting material.  The jeans supposedly don't stretch out or get baggy over the course of the day.  (I'm still deciding on this one.)  I like the drapey material of the cardigan vest and that it covers my rear end but it's a little too long and makes me look shorter so I'm returning it.  Even if it wasn't too long in the back, I'm pretty sure it still wouldn't get worn often.  I already have a lot of cardigans similar to this one so if I buy more cardigans I want them to have an interesting design or color/pattern that stands out from the others I own.  My main interest for this fix was maxi dresses and I'm glad my stylist Jennifer included two distinct options for me to consider - one being the Gilli Mitchel dress that I specifically mentioned in my note to her.  I like the Gilli Mitchel dress a lot even though the opening in the lower back is a step outside of my comfort zone.  I usually avoid tops or dresses that expose my back but I wanted to give it a try anyway because I knew I could wear a cardigan or blazer over it when going somewhere I felt the lower back opening wouldn't be appropriate.  I love the stripes, the navy and taupe color, and the length.  It would be a great dress to wear the rest of summer.  I think the fit is fine everywhere but in the tummy area.  Unfortunately I looked a couple of months prego because of the slim fit in the mid-section.  I really wanted this dress to work but the mid-section isn't flattering so I'm sadly returning it.  The Papermoon Ikat maxi dress fit perfectly but I'm not sure yet how I feel about the large Ikat pattern.  I think it's because the dress is navy and orange; if it were black and white the large Ikat pattern would probably look less bold.  I do like some Ikat patterns but this one is a lot bolder than anything I've tried before.  (I'm still deciding on this one.  I've seen this dress style offered by Stitch Fix in many different patterns so I may return this one and request a different pattern in my next fix.)  I've been wanting a brown clutch or small brown crossbody bag for a while and I like the design the Urban Expressions clutch but I'm not sure I like the yellowish-brown color of the material.  The polka-dot lining is cute though!  If it were a darker, richer brown I think it would be a no brainer for me to keep it.  (I'm still deciding on the clutch but I think my Yorkie Pippa was voting for it...)

Thanks for reading and feel free to share your opinions on the UNDECIDED items!

After much deliberation, I decided to return the Papermoon maxi dress and the clutch and keep the skinny jeans.  I feel that because of the large Ikat pattern and the orange color of the ikat print, I likely wouldn't wear the dress often.  I do like the style and fit of this dress so I will see if I can get another pattern sent to me in a future Fix.  And I think a darker brown convertible clutch/crossbody would be a better option for me than the light brown Urban Expressions one which I could only use as a clutch.  The name of the DL1961 skinny jean style inside the waistband says "Florence" but Stitch Fix is calling them "Estrella".  I did some searching online about DL1961 jeans and the "Florence" insta-sculpt skinny jeans retail for about $180 at places like Bloomingdale's so for $98 I think I'm getting a pretty good deal.  Plus, I wear skinny jeans all the time and this pair fit me well so I know I will get a lot of wear and my money's worth out of this item which is why I ultimately decided to keep them.
